What to Do in Okinawa for 7 Days: The Ultimate Road Trip Itinerary

Okinawa offers a striking contrast to mainland Japan. Far from the neon skyscrapers of Tokyo and the crowded temples of Kyoto, this former independent kingdom (the Ryukyu Kingdom) cultivates its own distinct dialect, cuisine, subtropical climate, and warm hospitality encapsulated in the ancient proverb Ichariba Chōde ("Once we meet, we become family"). Here is our complete 7-day road trip itinerary, refined and field-tested by a bilingual resident guide living on the island since 2018.

Days 1 & 2: Royal Ryukyu Heritage & Urban Naha

After landing at Naha International Airport, resist the urge to immediately pick up a rental car. Naha is compact and remarkably pedestrian-friendly, with the elevated Yui Rail monorail connecting the airport to downtown in under 15 minutes.

Day 1: Shuri Castle & Ancient Pottery Alleys

Start your morning exploring the hilltop historical precinct of Shuri Castle (Shurijō), the political and religious epicenter of the Ryukyu Kingdom from the 15th to 19th centuries. Today, visitors can witness the historic reconstruction following the 2019 fire, observing traditional Okinawan carpenters working with aged Japanese cypress.

In the afternoon, walk down the coral limestone cobbles of Tsuboya Yachimun Street, home to traditional kiln masters practicing pottery since the 17th century. Conclude your evening at an authentic local izakaya enjoying seasonal tapas, aged awamori, and live sanshin folk music.

Day 2: Makishi Public Market & Naminoue Shrine

Immerse your senses at the renovated First Makishi Public Market, famous for its colorful display of tropical parrotfish, spiny lobsters, and local wagyu beef. Upstairs, local family stalls will cook your chosen catch on the spot. Later, stroll past Naminoue Shrine, dramatically perched atop a coastal cliff overlooking an azure bay.

Days 3 & 4: Into the Ancient UNESCO Rainforest of Yanbaru

On Day 3, pick up your rental car in Naha and embark on your journey northward. As soon as you pass Nago city, the landscape transforms from subtropical resorts into a wild, mountainous canopy: the ancient rainforest of Yanbaru, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2021.

Important driving tip: Travelers from Australia, Singapore, the US, UK, and Canada can drive smoothly with a 1949 Geneva International Driving Permit (IDP). For complete driving advice, road signs, and zero-alcohol regulations, read our detailed Driving in Okinawa & IDP Guide.

Day 3: Scenic Coastal Route & Motobu Gateway

Stop at Cape Manzamo to marvel at the iconic elephant-trunk limestone formation carved by Pacific swells. Drive along Route 58, one of Japan's most scenic coastal highways, arriving in Nago for lunch to savor traditional pork rib soki soba.

Day 4: Secret Waterfalls & The Dramatic Cliffs of Cape Hedo

Spend the day hiking beneath towering ancient tree ferns (Cyathea lepifera) and discovering hidden river cascades where endemic wildlife like the flightless Yanbaru rail (Yanbaru kuina) thrive. Finish the afternoon at Cape Hedo, the northernmost tip of the island, where the tempestuous Pacific meets the East China Sea against 70-meter-high limestone precipices.

Days 5 & 6: Motobu Peninsula, Kouri Island & The Sacred South

Day 5: Kouri Marine Bridge & Nakijin Castle Ruins (UNESCO)

Cross the breathtaking 2-kilometer Kouri Bridge suspended over shallow emerald lagoons. After swimming at Kouri Beach, explore the serpentine defensive walls of Nakijin Castle, constructed from fossilized coral limestone in the early 1300s. In the late afternoon, take a peaceful walk through the traditional coastal village of Bise, sheltered by thousands of ancient Fukugi windbreak trees.

Day 6: Seifa Utaki Sanctuary & Cape Chinen

Head to the southern tip of the island to visit Sēfa Utaki, the most sacred natural shrine of the Ryukyu Kingdom. Nestled in a lush coastal forest, this cathedral of gigantic megaliths was where high royal priestesses prayed facing the holy island of Kudaka. Follow up with panoramic views at Cape Chinen and fresh tempura on the fishing islet of Ojima.

Arnaud's Honest Advice: Should You Visit the Kerama Islands During a 7-Day Road Trip?

Many generic online itineraries recommend spending 2 days on the Kerama Islands (Zamami or Tokashiki). For a 7-day trip with a rental car, we generally advise against it:

  • Rental Car Redundancy: You must leave your rented car in paid port parking at Naha (1,500 to 2,000 JPY/day) while paying additional ferry tickets.
  • Main Island Diversity: Between Yanbaru, Motobu, royal castles, and Seifa Utaki, 7 days is just enough to experience the main island without rushing.
  • When to go to Kerama: The Kerama Islands are fantastic for short 2 to 3-day getaways without a car, or as a dedicated 1-day snorkeling excursion.

Day 7: Artisanal Crafts & Departure

Dedicate your final morning in Naha to authentic regional crafts:

  • Ryukyu Glass: Vibrant handblown glassware originally crafted by melting recycled soda bottles discarded in post-war eras.
  • Bingata Textiles: Intricate stencil-dyed natural linen depicting tropical fauna and waves.
  • Kokuto Black Sugar: Unrefined mineral-rich sugarcane pressed in northern Okinawa villages.

Return your rental car near Naha Airport, departing with unforgettable memories of Ryukyu history and subtropical nature.

Frequently Asked Questions: 7-Day Okinawa Itinerary

What is the best season for a 7-day road trip?

Spring (April to May) and autumn (October to November) are ideal. Daytime temperatures range from 24°C to 28°C, perfect for both hiking and swimming, avoiding high summer humidity and typhoon season peaks.

Is a rental car mandatory for this itinerary?

Yes, for days 3 through 6. While Naha is easily explored via the Yui Rail monorail, northern UNESCO rainforests, remote Cape Hedo cliffs, and scenic Motobu bridges have very limited public bus connections.
